Some people think dry dog food is good for your dog, others do not.  The verdict is still out.  However, it has been proven that good quality dry food can give dogs all the nutrition they need.  Finding good quality dog food is easy as well.  However, let’s add to the debate by looking at the pros and cons of this type of dog food.

Pros of Dry Dog Food

There are quite a few pros to buying dry dog food, such as:

It allows your dog to exercise their teeth and gums, because it has to be chewed.  Furthermore, it acts as a natural tooth brush as well.
This type of food is cheaper and better for your finances.  Of course, good quality versions can be quite expensive, but generally still cheaper than the same quality wet food or making your own food.
By reading the labels of dry dog food, you can ensure that your dog receives a healthy and balanced diet.
It is easier to feed your dog this type of food and hence very convenient in today’s busy lives.
This type of food lasts longer than canned food or other types of wet food.

Cons of Dry Dog Food

Of course, there are also distinctive downsides to buying dry dog food.  These include:

They contain high levels of preservatives and if your dog suffers from allergies, it is more likely they will be badly affected by this type of food.
It can be quite complicated to choose the right stage of food.  For example when your dog is no longer a puppy and when it becomes a senior, for example.
In the case of older dogs, dry dog food can actually be harmful for their teeth.  Dog’s teeth become brittle over time and it is more likely that they will break some of their teeth.

Choosing the dry dog food that is best for you is down to personal choice but you should always read the labels before buying.

Dog Food Comparisons

Friday, November 11th, 2011

I was online buying dog food today at Petflow, and I noticed something interesting. I saw that the pet store had some food in large bins that you could measure out into bags and pay for by the pound. There was a wide variety of food sold this way, and it allowed you to get as little or as much as you needed, which I thought was smart and convenient. I looked at the prices of the different varieties available, and then I compared it with the kinds already in bags on the shelves. I only had a little money and wanted it to stretch, so I was trying to figure out which was the cheaper way to purchase the 10 pounds of food I needed. It turned out that buying the already packaged food was actually cheaper, so that’s what I decided to go with, but I still like the idea of being able to specify the amount I bought if I didn’t need what the packages contained.

Train Your Dog to Shake Hands

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

Training your dog to shake hands is one of the simplest and cutest tricks that you can ever teach your dog to do. It will also help you to teach your dog other tricks, such as, high five and wave good bye.

It is best to practice this trick with your dog in a quiet place that has few, if any, distractions. Begin to train your dog by telling him to sit. Next, say shake” or “shake hands” and gently pick up one of your dog’s paws. Then, give your dog a treat and repeat this process several times. After you have repeated this several times, begin holding out your hand and saying “shake”. Your dog should reach out their paw and put it in your hand. However, if your dog didn’t reach out its paw, keeping saying “shake” and grabbing your dog’s paw for him. Then, eventually try holding out your hand again and saying “shake”. Practice this trick everyday for five minutes until your dog can shake hands on command.

You should look at the labels of the dog food products you purchase, because no two brands are exactly alike. Brands like Pedigree dog food offer different varieties of meals and treats that optimize the digestion of different dog breeds. Some breeds are more active than others, so they’ll metabolize food faster. Some can’t digest too much protein. Some prefer wet meals over dry ones. There are too many dog breeds and particularities to cover, but your pet’s vet will likely give you the skinny on which variety complements his or her appetite better.

You can’t go wrong with the top five ingredients on dog food labels, though. These will be listed according to the proportionate amounts per serving, from the highest to the lowest. Chicken meal is usually most abundant, but eggs, fish, and unsaturated fat may also be present. Aside from protein, a good can of dog food should also contain enough fiber, minerals, and nutrients to balance out the recommended daily diet.

The Safe Use Of In Home Veterinary Care

Sunday, November 6th, 2011

Pet owners will need to visit a mobile vet clinic or veterinarian on occasion. For example, all rabies shots are to be given by a vet; this is required by law in most areas. However, people often take their animals to the vet for things that are definitely within the scope of safe and effective in home veterinary care.

People have treated their own animals for centuries. Often there was no one else to do it. Many people lived in such isolation that they had to solve any problems themselves. A horse with colic (drench with oil and walk), a dog torn up by a wild animal (stitch up the wounds that needed closing and cover with goose grease or lard), or a cow with a prolapsed uterus (sprinkle the organ mass with powdered sugar and stuff it back in) had to be helped or allowed to die.

The starting point for caring for pets is common sense. A dog that gets insufficient exercise, carries excess weight, and does not have access to fresh water at all times cannot be healthy. Problems of inactive obesity are the same as they would be for a human: poor circulation, shallow breathing and oxygen deprivation, poor elimination, and wear and tear on joints. A healthy lifestyle is the basis for good health and fewer trips to the vet.

Second in importance is a foundational knowledge of the principles of health care. It is easy to find information on traditional herbal medicine, on homeopathy, on vitamin and mineral therapy, and on elementary first aid. Knowing that Aloe Vera gel is good for cuts as well as burns and that natural Vitamin E has antibacterial and healing properties means that you can confidently treat superficial cuts and abrasions. The homeopathic tissue salt Calc Phos, which relieves human leg cramps, will ease a horse that is ‘tied up’.

Caring for Exotic Dogs

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

I have exotic dogs in my house and hence I take special care to feed them without fail. I have been strictly feeding them blue buffalo pet food to cope with the dog’s life and health. Above all, lots of other dogs used to come to my house to see my dogs and hence I have installed the gate preventing their entry. Thus my dogs are safe from dangers of other dogs. I too have asked my watchman to take care of my dogs during the night time without any deviation. If at all they produce some unusual sound, I wake up immediately to look after them.

Our Neighbor’s Disgusting Dogs

Sunday, October 23rd, 2011

Our neighbors just don’t take care of their dogs. They really gross me out and the kids are always wanting to pet them. However, recently the neighbors told me that their dogs had dog mites. Now, I have told the kids that they are not to touch the dogs. It is the most disgusting thing that I have ever heard of! I can’t believe that they don’t take better care of those little dogs. They shouldn’t be allowed to have dogs at all.
