One of the largest medieval swords to have ever been used was the Scottish claymore. The term claymore, form the Scottish Gaelic, actually means great sword. A large, two-handed sword, the claymore was used in conflicts with the English, as well as in battles among the clans. Although there were other, larger swords used, this was one of the most popular – it stayed en vogue for nearly two hundred years. One of the last battles where it saw use was the Battle of Killiecrankie in 1689. Replicas of these swords have become very popular with the collectors of historical swords replicas. Even I have one, which helps to round out my medieval collection. The movie Braveheart features quite a few claymores in use as well, if you want to see them in action. They make great additions to most collections, but you should be aware that they do require more space.
